Notes on effective contacts with officials:
The most effective means of communication
is in person, by phone, or by email. Because of the anthrax scare
after 9/11 letters now take a long while to reach their recipient.
You are more likely to get an answer if you ask for one. Often the
issue is one in which the official is merely counting yeas and nays, so you
do not have to spend a lot of effort to educate them on the issue unless
you believe you have a perspective they have probably not already encountered.
Contacts from constituents do have influence, but in these days of
email and phone it takes lots of contacts to have real effect, so never think
that your personal effort is not worthwhile.
State and local officials do respond
to emails. In fact, since they have little or no secretarial help,
emails may produce better response, at least from those politicians who are
comfortable with email.
