Details:

We enjoyed this so much last year we are doing it again. Car-camp in a meadow -- not a developed campground - at the base of Pompey & Cole/Cold Mts west of Amherst, Va. The meadow, cleared in the early 1800's for grazing, is a terrific spot for star-gazing, sunrises and sunsets. Since this is a car-camp, you can drive up after work on Friday, there is no hike into a base camp.

We will do a short day hike, perhaps along the AT or to the Mt Pleasant overlook, Friday for those who arrive in the early afternoon. Saturday we will do a loop hike of approximately 6.0 miles to Cold Mt, through Cow Camp Gap and back to base camp. The leaves should be at their peak this weekend. There are sweeping vistas from several of the points on Saturday's hike.

See National Geographic map #789, the Mt Pleasant Nat Scenic Area, and available for order at this link. For more information see the the Cold Mountain link in the left bar of the HikingUpward web site found at this link.  For a small Nat Geo 7.5 minute topo map of this area see this link.

Group size is limited. To participate: (1) Fitness and experience to cover the distances and proper gear. (2) Other terms and conditions at the top of the main NC Chapter Outings page for more details. (www.nc.sierraclub.org/outings). Leader pre-approval plus $25 refundable at the trailhead deposit required.

The Saturday trail has not been scouted. I rate at moderate for distance (6.0 miles) and moderate to strenuous for elevation (1400 ft approx.).

Directions:

Approximately 20 miles west of Amherst, Virginia. More details provided for participants.
