1st Annual Mt. Rogers Winter Basecamp

When:

Friday, Feb 29, 2008
through Sunday, Mar 02, 2008

Meet at Grayson Highlands group campsite Friday at 3:30 p.m.

Details:

Join us for a winter outing to Mt. Rogers, the highest point in Virginia. Named in honor of Mr. Rogers, though perhaps not the one you think, it is the 1st place to go looking for snow in the southeast. In the immediate area are Grayson Highlands State Park, the Mt. Rogers National Recreation Area, and two wilderness areas, the Little Wilson Creek Wilderness, and the Lewis Fork Wilderness.

Meet at the park Friday afternoon to set-up our base camp or join us early Saturday morning. We'll hope to explore both wilderness areas, and may try an across-the-park hike to Elk Garden. Mt. Rogers has many day hike options and we will pick the ones best suited to our group and the weather conditions we encounter.

For this basecamp trip everyone is required to bring warm clothes, a winter tent and a winter sleeping bag, and lots of good, nourishing food. We may have a group meal Saturday night if everyone likes this idea and wants to pitch in some $ for it. A participant led car-pool is recommended, including sharing travel expenses. A small fee will be required to cover camping costs. Friendly dogs are allowed providing they are kept on a leash.

Leader pre-approval required plus a $25 deposit refundable at the group campground.

Directions:

Grayson Highlands Park is reached via U.S. 58 west of Mouth of Wilson and Galax, Va. From Google Maps enter "Grayson Highlands State Park" and you will see the park plus Mt. Rogers National Recreation Area, as shown in green area on the map.
