About Us: What is the Sierra Club?

The Sierra Club was founded in 1893 by the writer and naturalist John Muir. In the past century the Sierra Club has been a tireless voice for the thoughtful preservation of our natural heritage not only for our own well-being but for generations to come. The Orange-Chatham Group was originally called the Research Triangle Group and consisted of other regional groups. Presently there are over 1700 members in the group, which covers Alamance, Caswell, Chatham and Orange counties. The Orange-Chatham Group is one of 13 local groups in the North Carolina Chapter, which represents more than 14,000 members statewide.

Our mission statement

"To explore, enjoy and protect the wild places of the earth; to practice and promote responsible use of the Earth's ecosystems and resources; to educate and enlist humanity to protect and restore the quality of the natural and human environment; and to use all lawful means to carry out these objectives."
