| Gary Finkle | Hanging Rock | SAT. March 29 | Boys & Girls Club - Marsh Road |
It was off to Hanging Rock State Park. After a brief stop
to pick up some ICO friends at Davidson College, we made the journey north
toward the Virginia border. We arrived just before lunch time and found
the picnic area by a beautiful lake in the park. Some of us had lunch
while others were too anxious and looked for creatures among the fallen
leaves on the forest floor. Soon it was time for some hiking. As we hiked
higher and higher, you could see for miles. Just before we made it to
the top, we stopped for a rest and a (justly warranted) safety talk. We
could see for miles in every direction. We could even see the buildings
in Winston Salem. From Hanging Rock we switched trails and headed for
Wolf Rock for more great views. The kids agreed to try a little solo hiking.
Some thought it exciting while others were a little scared. Before you
knew it, it was time to head back to the van and head home. What a great
day in the woods. To read Jason's (one of the participants) description

Gary Finkle | Morrow Mtn | SAT. March 1 | Boys & Girls Club - Marsh Rd | It was an early spring trip to Morrow Mt. State Park. The weather was threatening and they were calling for a chance of rain. But that didn't dampen anyone's spirits. We arrived at the park and started things off by roasting hot dogs over a camp fire. The kids found just the right hot dog stick and "cooked their own dogs." After a hearty lunch we headed for the lake loop trail. When we got to the dam, the water was pouring down the lake. The recent rains had turned the lake back into a flowing river. We then climbed up to the top of the ridge where we could see for miles. Being early spring, there were no leaves on the trees yet. We hiked a long way and just as we were approaching the parking lot, the rain began to sprinkle down. We made it just in time. |
