February 24 - May 26, 2007 10 A.M. (Sat) - WILLIAM B. UMSTEAD STATE PARK HIKE.  
Sycamore Trail.  Moderate 7.2 mile hike at a steady pace. Please wear hiking boots and carry water; a picnic lunch is optional. Pre-registration is not required. March 10, 2007 (Sat) - HIKE ON THE FLAT RIVER TRAIL.   Hike 6-mile loop trail north of Durham on the Flat River. Start in morning and bring lunch to eat midway. Dogs on leashes welcome.  Contact:  Marcia Eickmeier at 919-644-1806.

March 25, 2007 1:30 P.M. (Sun) - CHAPEL HILL DAY HIKE.  Easy 3 mile hike with a coffee break!  Hike along Bolin Creek, connecting with the Greenway at MLK Blvd. Continue to Caffe Driad for tea/coffee/treats. Return to Umstead - about 3 miles round-trip. Level: easy. March 31, 2007 9 A.M. (Sat) -  HISTORIC URBAN HIKE IN DURHAM.  Urban hike starting at Oval Park (corner of West Club Blvd. and Oakland Ave.) this will be a 4 mile loop around Historic West Durham, with John Schlep, local history buff. APRIL

April 14, 2007 9:45 A.M. (Sat) -  HIKE IN DUKE WOODS.   Hike little-known trails in Duke Woods near Chapel Hill for 4 miles, 3 hours. Easy.  Meet at 9:45 a.m. at the gate. Optional lunch out after the hike. No reservations necessary.  From I-40, take exit #266 north (Hwy #86). Proceed 0.1 mile north toward Hillsborough. Turn right on Whitfield Road and go 2.6 miles to Duke Woods gate #25. April 21, 2007 - 11:30 A.M.  (Sat) - BLACK WATER KAYAK PADDLE.  Blackwater kayak paddle in Southeastern North Carolina (near Wilmington). Enjoy a scenic blackwater paddle on a remote creek that empties into the Northeast Cape Fear River. We will stop for lunch on an island where the creek and the river converge. Trip is approx. 3 1/2 - 4 hours in length. Space is limited. Limited number of kayaks available to lend.  $30 deposit required, which will be refunded if you show up for the trip.  No shows will lose the $30. Contact:

April 28, 2007- 9 A.M. (Sat) - DOWNTOWN DURHAM HIKE.   3 mile Historic Tour.  Downtown Durham urban hike starting at the Stanford Warren Library on Fayetteville Street. Hayti walking tour about 3 miles. Andre Vann will be pointing out historical places and and giving us a rich history of the area. MAY

May 25- May 28, 2007 (Fri-Sun) - BASE CAMP/DAYHIKE IN DOLLY SODS WILDERNESS, WVA.   Marvel at the beauty of spring in Dolly Sods Wilderness in the Monongahela National Forest.  Called "a bit of Canada in the South," this high, boggy plateau contains plants usually found much further north.  Many open views in this unusual "boggy bowl" makes Dolly Sods "one of a kind" in North America. This trip is rated strenuous due to the many stream and river crossings and rugged, wilderness conditions.  Participants must have adequate foot gear, confidence and appropriate skills. JUNE

June 28, 2007 through July 4, 2007 (Thurs-Wed) -  BACKPACK ON THE APPALACHIAN TRAIL,   Backpack on the Appalachian Trail through the Great Smokies.  We start from Fontana Dam and will do the 67 miles to Davenport Gap.  Equates to about 10.3 miles per day.  Rated strenuous, limit of four, refundable deposit required and trip will not be cancelled.  Contact: Chris David, 919-676-8927, chrisdavid@bellsouth.net  (CG)
